Auburn Men's Golf Coach Mike Griffin Leaving Coaching

Coach recruited Will and I've been around him several times over the past year. Coach, you will be missed. Good luck on your new job!

Auburn Men's Golf Coach Mike Griffin Leaving Coaching - AUBURN OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE: "Mike Griffin, who has served as the Auburn men's golf coach for the previous 25 seasons is stepping down from his coaching responsibilities and will remain with the program as the director of golf. A four-time Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, Griffin led the program to an SEC title in 2002 and eight SEC runner-up finishes, 16 NCAA Championship appearances and 19 NCAA Regional appearances.

'I have been here a long time and after looking at things through experienced eyes, I decided this is what was best for me and my family and for Auburn golf and the young people here,' Griffin said. 'When I was brought here, my purpose was to get a golf course, practice facility and team home built, and those have been completed.

'We've been very competitive, winning several tournament and individual titles, including SEC and Regional team and individual titles, and an NCAA individual title. The only thing we've not accomplished was winning a team title, however, what makes it better was having the opportunity to host an NCAA Championship.'"

Hawkins played in 10 tournaments in 2008-09, averaging 74.72 strokes per round. His best finish of the season was a second place (out of 75 golfers) effort at the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic. He carded a three-round score of 210 (-6). Hawkins was also named to the All-OVC second-team and All-OVC Newcomer Teams.

Lawrence Kutner is dead

Last night, I was watching an episode of House called "Simple Explanation". During the episode, Lawrence Kutner, (a member of House's team) was found dead of an apparent suicide. It really wasn't consistent with his character, so I did some checking to see if I could find out more information. Wikipedia to the rescue!

"Kutner is found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his apartment by Thirteen and Foreman in 'Simple Explanation'. Kutner left no reason for his suicide, causing Dr. House to suspect foul play. The show's producers have confirmed that his death was indeed a suicide. Actor Kal Penn, who portrayed Kutner, had accepted a job at the White House as 'a liaison connecting the Obama administration with arts and entertainment groups, as well as with the Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities.'"

The Spoetzl Brewery is 100 years old.

Some of you know may not know what the Spoetzl Brewery. Well, it's the home of Shiner Beer, located in Shiner, TX. From their website, a description of 1909.
Recently immigrated Germans and Czechs who have settled in the new town of Shiner bring many of their traditions and tastes with them to the New World. Still yearning for their classic Bavarian brews, they form the Shiner Brewing Association. In a makeshift brewery, the beginning of Shiner Beer makes its debut as Shiner Premium.

Arc Angels Fly Again

Arc Angels Fly Again:
It's a great day for Austin music fans. One of the best bands from Austin is reuniting (and more importantly) recording a new album!

Arc Angels, the Austin, Texas-based all-star group formed in the wake of Stevie Ray Vaughn's death, are ready to take full flight again.

After playing together periodically during the past seven years, the band plans to release a DVD this year, tour extensively -- including two appearances during this month's South By Southwest music festival and a May run with Eric Clapton in England -- and start work in its first album in 17 years.

Stupid email

I'm sure that all of you are on a mail list that a friend or family member has to share 'funny' emails. I received this from one of those people today:
At five minutes and six seconds after 4 AM on the 8th of July this year, the time and date will be 04:05:06 07/08/09. This will never happen again

I didn't respond, because I don't like to promote these emails, so I'm responding here:

Actually, that exact point in time will happen again every thousand years. And if you mean the sequential nature of the point in time, that will happen each of the next five years (05:06:07 08/09/10, 06:07:08 09/10/11, 07:08:09 10/11/12, 08:09:10 11/12/13 and 09:10:11 12/13/14)

New PC

After being prompted by this article in Computer Shopper, I decided to upgrade my Dell Dimension 2400. I bought it in December of 2003, so that’s really old by PC standards. I decided to purchase most of the products they recommended, as I’ve been out of the BYO (Build Your Own) market for a few years.

I’m really just replacing my desktop with this PC, but I will use the existing drives and other accessories from the Dimension. So, here are the parts that I purchase (all ordered via Newegg.com)

Case: Cooler Master Elite RC-330
Power Supply: Thermal Master TM-350-PMSR
Motherboard: Asus M2N68AM
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200
RAM: A-DATA 2GB DDR2 SDRAM

They also added a hard drive and a memory card reader, which I didn’t need. I do need to add a number of IDE devices to the PC and this motherboard only has one IDE controller, so that’s two devices and I have two optical drives to add to the system. I also need to add 3-4 IDE hard drives, so I ordered the SYBA SD-ATA133I PCI IDE Ultra Controller Card, which adds two more IDE channels. My boot drive will be an 80GB 2.5” SATA drive that came in my Inspiron 6400 laptop when I bought it in December of 2006.

I will be using MythBuntu as the operating system (at least initially). Not a bad deal for $200.

A joke?

A friend of mine sent this to me the other day...
Yesterday I was at my local Walmart buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for our loyal pet Bear the Wonder Dog, and was in the checkout line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's butt and a car hit us both. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.

Walmart won't let me shop there anymore.

Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the
world to think of crazy things to say. F

Rethinking the lifetime ban….

Circuit City is kaput. Fry’s is 30 minutes away. Microcenter is 30 minutes away (although it’s only 10 minutes from work). The other night I was trying to get a video off of my camcorder and it wouldn’t play. All indications were that I needed a head cleaner. A Mini-DV head cleaner…

I was also in a time crunch and Best Buy is 10 minutes from the house, so I went there. I found exactly what I needed at a fair price. Someone asked if they could help me. The checkout was painless.

I am lifting the lifetime ban. I still prefer MicroCenter and Fry’s, but for the first time in years, I had a pleasant experience at a Best Buy…
